2019 Stand Up Surf Shop King of the Cut

Sun, 1 Dec 2019
12:00 - 18:30

Australia's World Class Downwind Run

The Stand Up Surf Shop King of The Cut (KOTC) is held along the beautiful Peel Coastline where the famed, powerful and consistent West Coast sea breeze blows perfect, un-interrupted runners like an endless conveyor belt.

The 2019 edition of the Australian Downwind Championship the King of The Cut is in its 8th year and is again presented by SUPWA and the event’s long-time sponsor, the Stand Up Surf Shop in North Fremantle. Here’s what we have for you in 2019:

1. Two race distances - the KOTC24 and the KOTC12

The KOTC12 is 12 kilometres of groomed downwind runners from the common start at the Mandurah Cut to the finish at Doddies Beach. This run is fast and it’s a heap of fun!

The more challenging KOTC24 is the same 24 kilometre race as in previous years, finishing at Secret Harbour. This run consists of 17 kilometres of groomed runners with the last 7 kilometres generally the more technical downwinding section.

Both distances are dead downwind - no side chop. The King and Queen of the Cut are decided over the KOTC24 distance.

2. The Half Cut Challenge - Commencing Sunday 24th November before the and running five days until Thursday the 28th, The Half Cut Challenge will be the first of its kind in Australia. Held on the same course of the KOTC12, each day competitors can log their daily run times onto a leader board. The fastest time of the day will receive the leader’s singlet.  At the end of the week there will be prizes for the overall fastest time and greatest number of kilometres logged for the week. Details here: https://supwa.tidyhq.com/public/schedule/events/26190-the-supwa-half-cut-challenge

3. New Prizes for 2019KOTC24 Equal cash prizes for the fastest male (King of The Cut) and female (Queen of The Cut) on any board class (except SUP foil). Additional prizes for the fastest 14' SUP male and female with travel vouchers courtesy of Broadway Travel and free entry to the 2020 Gorge Paddle Challenge (Hood River, USA) downwind event. And yes, if a 14’ board is first across the line they get both prizes! KOTC12 male and female winners will each receive $1000 in-store vouchers at the Stand Up Surf Shop.

Once again, the KOTC offers equal prizes across genders.

4. Prone Paddle Board Class - After the impressive numbers from last year, this division will open up into age group categories across both the KOTC24 and KOTC12 races (depending on numbers of competitors in each age group).

5. Foiling Class - DC Foils have once again kindly put up a $500 prize for 1st Foiling Board across the KOTC24 line. Whilst this division won't compete for the King and Queen of The Cut prizes and trophy, we are stoked to have foils on the KOTC course. Also this year sees another King of the Cut Australian first - wing foiling will compete as a demonstration division.

6. Outriggers - With the AOCRA OC1/V1 & OC2 outrigger canoe Nationals being held 2 weeks before, the OC field this year promises to be big! Age groups categories also apply (depending on division numbers). This year the big boats - OC2 and OC6 will compete in the KotC12!

7. KOTC Registration, Presentations and Stoke Party - this year the registration for the KOTC12 & 24 will be held at Doddies Beach (not at Secret Harbour) the finish area for the KOTC12. Keeping everything in the Mandurah area, the Presentations and the Stoke Party after the race will again be held at the Oceanic Bar & Grill in central Mandurah.

8. Paddling Clinics - 2018 King of The Cut title holder and 2019 World M2O Champion James Casey plus World Champion Michael Booth will be running SUP paddle clinics during the KOTC Downwind week. More details to come but don’t miss out if you’re keen to learn from two of the best SUP coaches in the business.

This year the event will again be tracked live by the great people at Track Me Live. Follow the link for 2018 competitor details, tracking and results: http://live.trackmelive.com.au/King-Of-Cut-18/
