Mark the third weekend of March in your calendars for the most anticipated SUPWA event of the year: the Wedge Island Shaka!

About the Shaka

For those new to the scene, the Shaka is an all-day event where competitors, friends, family and spectators alike gather on the beautiful Wedge Island reserve for a family friendly day of ocean SUP fun. The day revolves around a friendly longboard-style SUP surf competition and SUP technical races.

Beginner Friendly and Inclusive

This event is designed to be beginner-friendly, encouraging newcomers to get involved and have a go on the day. To ensure accessibility, any length of board is permitted in the Shaka surf competition. However, longboard SUPs are encouraged, with additional points awarded for standout longboard styling. The surf format allows everyone to surf twice, with no knockout heats. Divisions include male, female, juniors and a rookie division. The Tech Race will also feature a rookie division for those just starting out. In addition everyone gets a go at judging the surfers under the guidance of an acredited surfing judge to teach the ropes.

Event Updates and Location Details

As in previous years, SUPWA will announce on its Facebook page a week in advance whether the Shaka will be held on Saturday or Sunday, based on the surf and wind forecast. On the day, SUPWA will provide details on the exact location the event will be held at the reserve and how to get there, following an assessment of the sand banks to determine the best possible location for the event.

Access and Restrictions

Please note, the event location is accessible by 4WD only. However, attendees can park near the fishing shacks and flag down a lift from fellow attendies if needed. Dogs are not permitted at the event.

Entry Fees

Entry is $50 for SUPWA members and $80 for non-members (which includes a day-only SUPWA membership). All entry fees include the coveted SHAKA 2026 T-Shirt.

Participants who enter before 21 February can pre-order their tees to ensure they receive their preferred fit and size. Please indicate in the entry comments below if you would like a women’s or men’s cut, and your size (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL).
