Welcome to SUPWA

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is exactly as its title suggests – standing up on a board and paddling.

There are many variations, and the sport is considered one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the world.

It is practiced on rivers, lakes, canals, whitewater, the ocean – basically anywhere there is water.

As well as world-class competitions, participants also enjoy stand up paddling as a fitness activity and as a unique way to sightsee.

One of the attractions of SUP is its versatility as an activity. Paddlers can be seen on rivers, canals, stream, lakes, on the ocean, even on wildwater.

SUP is believed to have originated in Africa, became very popular in Hawaii in the 1940’s, and can now be seen in countries and on waterways all over the globe.

SUPWA was incorporated in July 2012 with the objects of:

  • organising and promoting events within all competitive disciplines of stand up paddling in Western Australia, either independently or in alignment with other clubs or organisations that support SUP; and

  • nurturing and upholding the unique SUP community lifestyle and values.

SUPWA Paddle Challenge - 2025 / 2026
29-09-2025 17:00 – 30-08-2026 19:00
SUPWA is pleased to release the event calendar of SUP events for 2025 / 2026. These 27 events include paddle events run by Paddle WA and the various paddling clubs around Perth and ocean downwind events that are suitable for SUP, as well as SUPWA run events like the Wedge Island Shaka Long Board Surf competition and the Afterglow Tech race series. In order to encourage participation of SUP competitors in these events, SUPWA will be running a competition at this stage called "The SUPWA Paddle Challenge" (or until we come up with something better) whereby 14 of these events are classified as Ranking Events. The top 4 male and female competitors in these will score points (5 for 1st, 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th) with all other competitors scoring 1 point. A competitor's 7 best results in Ranking Events through the year will count towards their season points tally, with them receiving 1 point for every other event they have have competed in the season (including participation events). Events include Flat Water, Tech racing, Downind and Surfing., so this will provide the opportunity for people to try out other discipline. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the season for best performances overall as well as across a number of categories. (PS...As it the first year we have run the combined events the SUPWA committee reserves the right to add or delete events.....or change the rules if it appears the Pratty is leading by too much). The competition is open to all SUPWA members. No need to enter as we'll keep track of result through the season, publishing regular updates https://supwa.tidyhq.com/public/storage/f/383c644620967308a59c4251c6e8946d/SUPWA-Event-Calendar-2025-2026-update-14-Dec-.pdf
