Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic - Surf Series 1
Rottnest, WA
08-05-2015 07:30 – 10-05-2015 12:00
The Stand up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic     Round # 1 - Rottnest Island      Western Australia’s iconic Rottnest Island is set to showcase some of the countries very best Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) talent, with the inaugural Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic and WA SUP State Titles set to make a splash on Rottnest’s picturesque beaches and pristine waters early next month.  In what is fast shaping to be the largest SUP event to ever be held in WA, the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic is a new and exciting addition to the Surfing WA events calendar for 2015. The three-day competition will combine both professional and amateur divisions in a true celebration of surfing’s newest code.  "We are really driven to develop a marquee event for each of the boardriding codes here in the west," said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. "Rottnest is such an amazing event location, rich in surfing history and we’re excited to be bringing SUP to the island for the first time."  Boasting a rich prize purse of $7,000 as well as valuable qualification points towards the 2015 Australian SUP Titles to be held in Currumbin QLD in November, the event is expected to attract 100 plus competitors to the holiday island.  Amongst the field of confirmed competitors is 2014 world # 18 Justin Holland, Kai Bates and current Australian Champion Rick Jakovich (Gracetown, WA) and his brother Jake who is the reigning WA Open Men’s State Champion.  “SUP riders in WA have been looking forward to a high performance contest for quite some time and Rottnest provides the perfect playground,” said Stand Up Surf Shop owner Mike Galvin. “We are happy to be supporting events that help develop all levels of the sport and display what the WA coast has to offer and why it is ideal for all forms of SUP.”  Anticipation is building within the SUP community, with rumours of interest from many international competitors from as far a field as Hawaii, the United States and Tahiti.  The professional SUP divisions are set to get underway on Friday the 8th of May with the WA SUP State Titles to commence on Saturday the 9th May.  Entry positions for both the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic and WA SUP State Titles are still open via www.surfingwa.com.au. Competitors can also find out further information about the awesome winter packages on offer thanks to the Rottnest Island Authority and Rottnest Express by clicking here. https://www.surfingaustralia.com/wa/event.php?id=1321

WA Surf Flatwater20
Ascot Kayak Club - Garvey Park Ascot, Western Australia
07:30 – 14:00
WA Surf Flatwater20   PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT DATE HAS CHANGED TO THE 22ND OF MARCH WA's best and only SUP Marathon race. Held this year in the beautful surrounds of Bayswater - near the finish for the Avon Decent. The WA Surf Flatwater20 is the premier marathon even, its a rewarding challenge and it is tactical, the key is to draft your competitors, which results in a long conga line of paddlers - which is quite spectacular to watch.    This year we have a couple of new additions to make the racing even more exciting. Teams of either 2 or 3 can enter - electing to either paddle the course as a team or divide the course into relay legs or both! Team paddling is similar to the Tour de France where a team of 2 or 3 will create their own train and swap over the lead to get the fastest pace - by mindful however, that you will be timed off your slowest paddler (don't fall off the train!). The relay option is simply doing a lap or 2 each of the 4 lap course (5km per lap). The change over pen holds the paddlers, as your paddler comes by you tag them to change over or you can elect to paddler with them as a team - tactical options. The change over pen is a set area of ~100m, you must tag within this zone to chahnge over with your team member - if you are outside this zone (ie you both paddled past without tagging) then you are deemed to be paddling together as a team (draft train) - the time or changeover person on the next lap will be taken off the slower paddler in the team. This will make for excting racing - anyone can draft anyone (within their gender), so there will be trains and break aways - something always going! For course the real focus will be on the solo paddlers. These guys and girls represent the top paddlers from the state - taking on the full 20km for National representation.  Should be a great day - make sure you you get onboard a train!
