SUPWA Presents The Michael Booth Paddling Clinic - West Oz Downwind Week   Michael Booth is a stand up paddler from the east coast of Australia with a background in many sports. After competing at an elite level in Surf Life Saving, Kayaking and Ocean Ski in 2016 he has turned his major focus to sup. With an extensive knowledge in paddlesports and an ability to adapt his skills he has successfully burst onto the SUP scene in 2016. In doing so this year he has won events in Australia including 12 Towers, Forster Island Paddle, Noosa Surfing Festival, Qld SUP titles and overseas Lost Mills - Germany, Sainte Maxime - France, the SUP CUP - Croatia, Battle of the Bay - San Fransisco, The Chigaski SUP Cup - Japan & The Kalamalka Classic - Canada.    With Michaels extensive knowledge in paddling in many different sports he is offering to teach his secrets and help you become a better paddler. His goal is to help you to become a more efficient and effective paddler which will ultimately help you have more fun!   This is an opportunity to learn from the present World Champion from the Pacific Paddle Games. Spots are limited for the 2 hour clinic so book early to avoid disappointment.   Michael is a Starboard Team rider and the full 2017 Race board range will be on hand to try out during the clinic.

Angie Jackson Ladies Downwind Clinic - West Oz Downwind Week Angie Jackson is Australia's top female SUP paddler. She has represented Australia and won gold at the ISA World Championships. She is also undefeated in Australia's premier Downwind race - The King of the Cut. "I am a big believer in promoting women's sup. It's such an amazing sport and its wonderful to watch and teach women get out there and get involved." This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the best female paddlers in the world. Angie will take 20 ladies through the basics of paddling technique and the specifics of downwind paddling. The clinic is aimed at all levels, but specifically those that are keen to improve their ocean downwinding. The session will be held just before and during the Port2Starboard Paddle (entry for this event is included in the price for the Angie Jackson Clinic). The session will comprise of : 1. Onshore theory and technique 2. The Port 2 Starboard presented by Starboard and Express Two Storey Living The Port 2 Starboard is a celebration of Stand Up Paddle (SUP) proudly presented by Starboard. This participation event is unique as it embraces all Skill levels and gives the opportunity to paddle in a large controlled group. SUP professionals will chaperone those less experienced down the 7km course From Port beach to Swanbourne offering guidance along the way. Experience the thrill of ocean paddling and then celebrate your achievements and meet other SUPpers at the post event BBQ and presentations in the park. Entry includes annual event shirt (designed by Supnuts), after event softies and BBQ at a small cost to fundraise for the Youth Development Squad and the chance to make friends with other paddlers. You can bask in the glory of possibly winning; Youngest Competitor, Oldest Competitor, Best Wipeout and a perpetual award for Fastest Male and Female competitor!  Registration will be taking place from 10.30am through till 11.45am in the Grassed area next to the Swanbourne Surf Club in Swanbourne, Look for the big Starboard Tent. Event briefing will take place at 12pm with a1:30pm deep-water start to the race to allow adequate vehicle drops and board shuffles up to Port Beach, Fremantle.  $35 for SUPWA members and $50 non-members. Great value with quality event shirt included. The Battle of the Blades is an iconic event that takes place in some of Bunbury's most picturesque aquatic locations including Koombana Bay, The Cut, Leschenault Estuary and Australinds Ridley's Place. The event is open to SUP’s and Outrigger Canoes (OC1). The event boasts one the best novice courses with a downwind orientation on the West Coast, and is the perfect starter event for anyone interested in taking their first steps into paddling competitively.  Presented by Paddlers for Paddlers, The Bunbury Wavemasters. Two course will be on offer. A long course of just under 9km's, and a shorty of 4.3km - The Mervin 4000. Seasoned racers will enjoy the varied conditions the long course will bring, while the Mervin 4000 is perfect for new paddlers looking for a break out event to try. Short course paddlers will be joining half way with the long course guys, allowing rookie paddlers a box seat to watch the more experienced paddlers techniques as they link in with the field. If the winds are up, we encourage all to share a wave where safe and share the stoke. Race registration will be from 1100 to 1230 at the Casurina Boat Harbor Race briefing will be held at 1230 The race will start at 1400. Time has been allowed for competitors to organise vehicle shuffling to the finish. Online entries are via www.aocra.com.au however due to known issues with the site, entries will be accepted at the race registration. AOCRA member $25 Non members $33 Juniors $15 Please note that the long course does take competitors across Koombana Bay, which requires paddlers to carry a pfd and flare. This will need to be sighted at the race rego.  A leash is compulsory for both legs, no leash no start. The Battle of the Blades is hosted by the Bunbury Wavemasters, and we invite all to join us in our penultimate club event for the season. The Wavies love this little course and this event is their way of sharing it rest of the paddle community, and promoting the sport of SUP into regional WA. Please note: If adverse conditions are predicted, a decision on Thursday 1800 whether to run the event or not, and communicated via email and social media. DEMO  DAY CANCELLED - PADDLE LOOP CHANGED TO SUNDAY  morning 6th of November!  We regret to advise the Demo Day will not be held this weekend however SUPWA are running the Paddle loop at Deep Water Point we would love to see you there and there will be boards to try  See you at Deep Water Point Mt Pleasant. Registration between 7am & 7.20 for a 7.30 start, be there early to get your number. Come down to Deep Water Point Mt Pleasant, it's a free event for SUPWA members or $3 to non members, just nominate your completion time. 1. The Long Loop - 4.2km (below 30mins is a good time for strong paddler) 2. Short Loop - 2.2km (below 15mins is a good time for a strong paddler) All board lengths and types are welcome - It isn't a race, but about having fun. Nominate a time that you think you will achieve - next PaddleLoop try and beat that time. The trick is to paddle consistently at a speed you feel comfortable with - which is entirely up to you! The winner is the person closest to their nominated time.  The winners receives a great SUPWA T'shirt for those closest to their time - also the top 3 paddlers (closest to their time) receive Pod Points for their Pod. It's a fun opportunity to get involved with the very friendly SUPWA community and try or develop your SUP paddling. Get some tips, have some fun or have a goal for fitness. Open to all levels and all ages. (kids under 10 should be accompanied by an adult around the course).

The SUP Central and Express Living 2016 Flatwater 20 Marathon Extravaganza Registration closing time extended to Friday 21st October Midnight The 2016 Flat Water 20 Marathon Event is held in the beautiful upper reaches of the Swan River, Belmont Waters at the Ascot Kayak Club.   The Flat Water 20 is formatted to allow paddlers of all ages and abilities to participate and witness the incredible endurance and abilities of Western Australia’s elite SUP race paddlers, as they compete for state titles and prepare to take on the world’s best in the upcoming Doctor and world renowned King of the Cut events. The FW20 Teams and PaddleLoop format; Option 1: The ‘3-person team’ can nominate to complete the 16.5km course (each paddler doing a 5.5km lap) Option 2: The ‘3-person team’ can elect to form a "drafting train" to complete a 15km course as a team, course consists of (2 laps of 5.5km and 1 lap x 3.5km ‘Super lap’) the team must start and finish as a team) or Option 3: Individuals can participate and complete ‘one’ 3.5 km Paddle Loop lap – you simply nominate your expected time and the winner is the person closest to their nominated time.   So you can "Race it or Cruise it!".   SUPER LAP - Solo Competitors Only SUPWA will for the first time introduce a ‘Super Lap’ concept, within the multi- 4 lap course. The 4 laps consisting of 3 X 5.5km laps and 1 X 3.5km lap; each individual ‘Marathon’ paddler gets to take a short lap on one lap of their choice. This concept allows a competitor to break away from a train and make the race even more tactical.  The U/17 is a 9 km marathon distance, consisting of 1 x 5.5km lap and 1 x 3.5km lap. Don’t miss the first event on SUPWA’s 2016/17 Racing Calendar!   AWARDS 20 Km State Title (14' Board Class Only) Open Elite - Men Open Elite – Female Under 17 Male & Female 9km Under 40 Male & Female Over 40 Male & Female Over 50 Male State Championship medals and trophies will be awarded to Solo categories. Open Elite Category will be first 3 paddlers across the line in female and male regardless of age group. Team Event 16.5km – 3 legs (12.6 & 14ft Board Length Only) Awards will be issued for following categories: Team Closest to nominated time 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Teams (3 x Solo Leg Total: 16.5km) 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place Teams (Total: 15km Train) Novelty Prize – Best Dressed Team!   Teams are to select a captain who is to contact the team events manager for event rules. Can all use the same board or 3 separate boards?  Welcome all to the most tactical event on the SUPWA calendar, where a smart race plan can prove more valuable than being the fastest paddler or riding the fastest board. The Bridge to Bank is an exciting mixed teams race for paddlers of all levels. Paddlers are to register in a male/female team, each completing a section of the race. Teams will decide on there strongest paddler to complete the first leg from the Narrows Bridge 8km’s down river to the Point Walter Spit where they will tag their partner. The second member will then paddle the final 3km leg finishing at the home of SUP in WA, The Swan Yacht Club. The scientifically developed handicap system allows teams to ride boards ranging from short surf SUP’s all the way to unlimited race boards, an advantage being given to those game enough to paddle shorter boards. The only division available for registration is the mixed division which covers both genders and all board lengths. On the morning of the race, each team must register their board length with race officials. A fun afternoon will follow the race at the Swan Yacht Club, hopefully you can all stay around for a drink, some light hearted awards and maybe a bite to eat. COURSE DIRECTION. Currently the course is set for a start at the Narrows bridgeand finishing at the Swan Yacht Club. However, if conditions on the day are looking unfavorable, we have the ability to switch the race direction. A decision will be made closer to the date when a weather forecast is available and all competitors will be informed of necessary information in the days leading up to the event via email and SUPWA social media.   REGISTRATION. On-line registrations close at 7.00pm Thursday 15th September. We will be unable to take entries on the day of the event.   SIGN IN Sign in will open at 9.00am at Swan Yacht Club Riverside Rd, Preston Point, E Fremantle. The sign in point will be near the SUPWA shed. You will be supplied with your race number at this point. Please be early so that we can process all competitors before the briefing.   RUNNING TIME 0900:  Registration at The Swan Yacht Club 0930:  Race briefing 1030: Race start from The Narrows 1115 – 1200: Racers arrive at Point Walter 1200:  Cut off for paddlers arriving at Point Walter 1200-1300: Paddlers finish race at SYC   SAFETY All competitors are required to wear a legrope/leash whilst competing in this event. Life jackets and PFD's are not compulsory but can be worn if so desired by the competitor. There will be a rescue boat in attendance during the event.   LOGISTICS  Please organise with your paddling partner your transport logistics. Remember you will be changing paddlers at Point Walter Bank and the race will be finishing at the Swan Yacht Club. Make sure you're at the finish to cheer your teammate over the line.   PRESENTATIONS Presentations will be held at Swan Yacht Club in the outdoors alfresco area at approximately 1PM.  Free finger food will be available for competitors with meals and drinks also available from the club at great prices.   CONTACT Contact Wesley Fry on Facebook or 0452561147 if you have any questions regarding this event.   If you have requested a partner but have not yet received an email with their contact details, we will be in contact with you as soon as we have someone available.
