2018 STARBOARD BLACKBLADE-AUSTRALIAN SHORT COURSE TITLES…Supported by StandUp Paddle Sports
The Starboard Black Blade presented by Stand Up Paddle Sports is the finest SUP Short Course regatta in Australia. The Black Blade was the first SUP Short distance race on a buoyed course in the world outside America. This event has a unique decathlon style format with distances of 200m,1000m and 5000m.
Athletes race over the 3 distances with the times calculated to award the best paddler over all 3 distances
Race numbers are drawn from a hat to create a starting list for 200m heats, paddlers are then ranked into A,B and C finals for the 200m sprint race according to their heat times not age groups, this means we will have the fastest paddlers matched against each other. Paddlers will stay in there heat A,B or C for the 1000m race. The 5000m race will be a mass start.
To achieve a fair outcome over the 3 distances your time in the 200m is doubled the 1000m stays the same and the 5000m time is divided by 3.
This modern, tried and tested handicapping system means you have to do well in all distances to take out the title for your age division, but can make up time in distances you are better at. It’s a twist on just flatwater racing, it’s paddling consistency – sorts out the ultimate paddler – whether a Downwinder paddler, Flatwater racer or SUP Surfer – who’s got the Engine, Endurance and Tatics.
Board Class: Race Boards 14ft and under (must use same board for all 3 races)
Trophies awarded for Open/Elite* – Male/Female 1st,2nd and 3rd
Medals awarded for
Male U/40 1st,2nd and 3rd
Male O/40 1st,2nd and 3rd
Male 0/50 1st,2nd and 3rd
Female U/40 1st,2nd and 3rd
Female O/40 1st,2nd and 3rd
*Top 3 best overall times will constitute the Open/Elite division -recognising the most outstanding paddlers. Paddlers finishing outside of the top 3 will then be broken down into age divisions.
There is also Major Perpetual Trophy awarded for the fastest paddler Male and Female over 200m
As a special invitation we are also including OC1 racing at this year’s event and will award medals for 1st,2nd and 3rd
SUP paddlers don’t often get to race at a world class venue with certified photo finish timing so get your entries in early and start training and GO WEST for this great day of racing.
Who will be the fastest paddler over 200m? Who will be the overall Champion?

02-12-2017 09:00 – 03-12-2017 18:30
The Ultimate SUP DownWinder-DownUnder
The Stand Up Surf Shop King of the Cut is held along on the beautiful Peel Coast line where the famed, powerful and consistent West Coast Seabreeze blows perfect, un-interrupted runners like an endless conveyor belt.
In it's 6th year, the 2017 edition of the King of the Cut has some exciting additions:
1. The Starboard Half Cut - a shorter 10km race. This event will be held on the Saturday the same day as the main race. The Oceanside run is the first half of the famous KotC run, fantastic medium to large runners propelling you down the Peel Coast.
2. The Express Two Storey Living Jeeriginup Run - Estuary Downwind Fun Run on Friday night. Specialised DW Clinics with World Champion Athletes Travis Grant and Terrene Black.
3. Equal Prize Money - This year the prize money for Pro Female and Male competitors is equal for the top 3 paddlers.
4. Open Board Class For Prize Money- With the popularity of the Unlimited Class and listening to feedback from the Pro Riders, we now have a Male Open Board division for the Pro Class. This means the first 5 male paddlers across the line, regardless of board length (14' or UL) will take out the prize money. An Unlimited board has yet to win the KotC, the technical nature of the course seems to even out the board lengths.
5. Foiling Class - the KotC will open up a foiling divsion as a demonstation class for 2017. Whilst this division won't compete the Open Prize money (or the line honours KotC trophy), Enviroplumb has kindly put up a $500 prize for 1st Foiling Board across the line.
6. New Age Divisions - We have Female U/40 14' and Open Female Unlimited (not Pro Class). We also have Male O/60.
7. Outriggers For The Cut - Last year the organisers have invited Outriggers (OC1) to compete in the King of the Cut. The Outrigger community shares similar values to the SUP community and having this traditional craft involved in Australia's Premier SUP Downwind Event is a great addition. Welcome onboard Outriggers!
Limited Free Event Tee Shirt with early entries - offer closes 1st of Novmber 2017
Divisions:
In accordance with the SUPAA Rule Book, there will be a Male and Female Pro Class that will compete for the allocated prize money regardless of age group. A competitor is classed as a Pro Class competitor if they have finished in the top ten of a SUPAA Pro event (Top 5 in this particular event) or if they elect to enter the Pro Class for this event (thereby becoming ineligible for their age group). This year the Pro Class is an Open Board Division, so both 14' and UL will contest the Prize money and overall King of the Cut Trophy.
All other competitors will register in their age group (still remaining eligible for a Pro Class finish). Age group trophies are allocated, but not prize money. Note - Your age group is determined by your age on the 1st of Jan 2018.
